Project description and challenge

During the works on the highway E-75, Belgrade-Nis on the section Gornje Polje, it was determined due to an unstable slope that the highway section is endangered. By analyzing the results of the geodetic fixed points and observing the displacement in the inclinometer constructions, it can be said that it is a huge landslide. The landslide process affects both the surface sediments and the deeper areas in the shale rock. The work to stabilize the landslide was divided into 3 phases.

Solution

As part of Phase II, landslide stabilization was first carried out in the area of the South Morava River bank. These works included the construction of a reinforced soil embankment up to 12.5 m high in the area of the landslide toe. The embankment helped stabilize the slope as a ballast, as well as redistribute the mass after the excavation required for the road detour. Since the river is in close proximity to the highway, the embankment was founded on the construction of piles, over which riprap and concrete helped to a height of 5.8 m as a measure to improve the weak subsoil. In this way, a stable base was established. The design called for the use of flexible geogrids made of high modulus polyester yarns (PET) with low creep and coated with a protective polymer coating. The geogrid of the appropriate length was anchored and placed over the lost steel formwork. The length of the geogrid and its tensile strength had to be as specified in the design. At the slope face, the geogrid was folded and anchored inside the slope.

Benefits

In a search for the appropriate solution of Landslide stabilisation of this size, designers were looking preferably for the most flexible constructions that will allow unavoidable soil movements acceptable from stability and serviceability point of view, keeping nicely vegetated aesthetic appearance. Soil embankment reinforced with flexible geo grids has been an ideal solution giving in the same time opportunity not only to dispose but to use existing soil from the huge cut above the reinforced embankment.
